The rich young man had lived a good life, but he was still lacking. He needed more. So he came to Jesus asking for help. Jesus showed him that if he wanted to earn his way into the kingdom of heaven and receive eternal life he needed to do the impossible - sell everything he had (and he had a lot!), give it to the poor, and follow him. What the rich young man was unable to do, Jesus would do. He would give up the riches of heaven for the poor and make a new way into the kingdom of heaven where all who trust in him would receive a hundredfold all they had lost in the world.
