The woman in today’s passage had one of the most surprising encounters with Jesus that we’ve seen this summer. As Jesus sat eating supper in the home of a well known Pharisee, she came behind him, washed his feet with her tears, wiped them with her hair, kissed them, then anointed them with perfumed ointment. The dinner guests were shocked. They saw a desperate sinful woman. But Jesus saw a woman who knew of God’s extravagant love for her. Then defending and encouraging her, Jesus showed the dinner guests that they were far more broken than her because they did not know what it was to be loved and forgiven much.

Luke 7:36-50
