As Jesus spoke with Nicodemus, he challenged everything he thought he knew about God. Nicodemus was a Pharisee (teacher of the law) and a member of the Sanhedrin (ruler of the Jews). He had devoted his life to serving God. Yet Jesus showed Nicodemus that what he really needed was new birth, something that was impossible for him to accomplish on his own.
