In the Old Testament, being unclean meant that you did not have the right to do anything with God or with God’s people. People in Israel who were unclean could not worship God or be near other people. Lepers were the most unclean people of all in Israel. They had to live outside the city, wear the torn clothes of mourners, and yell out “unclean” whenever they were near people without leprosy.
When the leper in today’s passage realized that Jesus possessed the power to heal him, he knew that Jesus could also make him clean, which meant that he would have the right to have a real relationship with God and belong to a “clean” community of God’s people.
