The book of Ecclesiastes introduces us to the problem of meaning. The opening refrain,“meaningless, meaningless!” comes from someone who understands the dignity and nobility of human life. We were created to live meaningful lives. Yet throughout human history the quest for meaning has been filled with frustration and tragedy. We still struggle with the same fundamental questions about life that people faced thousands of years ago. There is “nothing new under the sun.” If there is meaning in life, hope in the face of meaningless tragedy and loss, then it must come from above the sun, from somewhere untouched by the brokenness in this world. By showing us how meaningless this life can be, Ecclesiastes prepares and drives us to look for a Savior from above. God has provided this savior in his son, Jesus Christ.
